The Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies

Website Overhaul, Site Visibility

The Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies is Duke University's premiere digital and print publication fostering the rigorous investigation of historiographical representations of European and western Asian cultural forms from late antiquity to the seventeenth century. The journal is published triannually, and manuscript submissions are collected year-round.

The focus of this solution was to redesign the JMEMS website, which had not been updated or altered since 2005, to improve site visibility and ease of usage for users.

What I Did:
  • Conducted user interviews with students and professors to better understand user pain points and experience
  • Overhauled and redesigned JMEMS website to be more user-friendly and accessible.
  • Iterative design process with journal editor to balance a modern, user-friendly interface and preservation of the journal's historical print illustrations and aesthetics.
  • Content and site management.
  • Set KPIs and designed analytics dashboards using Google Analytics.
  • Collaborated with Duke University Press to coordinate marketing and launch of new site.
Outcomes:
  • Sustained increased site visibility and increased monthly unique user traffic by 30%.
  • Increased journal submissions by 67% within first two months of new website launch.
